ON SATURDAY, December 5, the people of Kameruka and Candelo will come together to celebrate the centenary of the Kameruka Hall.

Organiser of the event Richard Barcham said on February 22, 1915, the owner of Kameruka Estate, Sir Robert Lucas-Tooth, died.

Mr Barcham said it was one of Sir Lucas-Tooth’s dying wishes that a hall be built for the people of Kameruka.

As World War One raged on decimating many families, and as three of Sir Lucas-Tooth’s sons died in the war this included his own family, the people of Kameruka raised their hall.

The centenary celebrations will begin from 2pm on the day with a vintage car drive then the hall ceremony will begin at 3pm.

The ceremony will include a demonstration by the 7th Light Horse Bemboka Troop, performance of WW1 songs by the Kameruka Centenary Band, period costuming and a hall dedication recalling its history and significance to today’s community.

This will be followed at 4.30pm by games for kids, roving performers, a tug o’ war and a picnic barbecue, leading up to the Kameruka bushdance from 6.30pm–9pm.

Built from bricks dug and fired at Kameruka, this historic hall houses a fine collection of photographs celebrating Kameruka, its industry, people, sport, the Lucas-Tooth family, as well as the Kameruka Honor Roll 1914-1918 that recalls those who served.

The hall is not normally open to the public and this centenary is a great opportunity to come and share the history of the local region.

If there are any questions contact Richard Barcham on 6493 2454.

To get to the hall, turn off the Candelo-Bega Rd near the Kameruka Estate onto West Kameruka Rd, then turn right onto Kameruka Estate Rd.
